Aesthetics of Gentrification (Logan Square, Chicago)

In 2014, I gathered a sea of visuals—logos, packaging, spaces, etc.—from new businesses in the gentrified/gentrifying neighborhood of Logan Square in Chicago. I paired this visual rhetoric with the verbal rhetoric from an interview with a principal of a Chicago design agency (as seen in this blog post articulating the “Top 5 Reasons to Start a Business in Logan Square”).

The pairing of this content—the interview with the appropriated visuals—resulted in a rhetorical study of graphic design’s role in both the visual changes of the landscape and the material displacement of a community.

All imagery and videos of the various businesses are their own.

Video. 2 min. 31 sec. 2014.
